26. POWER GIVEN TO THEM WHO KNOW JESUS AS THE CHRIST
By Felix Ngunjiri Gichuri
Jesus was Anointed by the Holy Spirit to Manifest the Kingdom of Heaven Here on Earth
At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit to empower Him to preach the good news (Another name for Good News is Gospel) of the kingdom of heaven. “Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,” (Luke 3:21-23 [KJV])
“And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,” (Luke 4:1 [KJV])
“And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” (Luke 4:13-21 [KJV])
Jesus Asked His Disciples Their Opinion of Who He Is
Jesus Christ actually knew that His chosen disciples did not know that He was the Messiah, the Anointed One, because they were not there when God filled Him with the Holy Spirit to empower Him to preach the good news of the kingdom of heaven to a lost and enslaved world. He asked them, “Who do people say that I am?” His disciples were at a loss on what to say as they were not sure of who He was as they had heard people call Him Master (Matthew 9:11, Matthew 12:38, Matthew 9:16, Luke 5:5, Luke 8:24, Luke 8:24, Luke 9:33,), Rabbi (John 3:2,). His disciples whom He had been with for a while started speculating of the many other names they had heard being attributed to Him, saying that some people say that He was prophet Isaiah, others said that He was prophet Jeremiah, while others said that He was John the Baptist, while still others said that He was some other prophet. Jesus had to keep the group in control to stop them from digressing. He asked them “Who do you say that I am?” All became quiet, so quiet that you could even hear the sound of a fallen pin. They were hoping that at least only one of them had an answer to stop this embarrassment. How could they have walked with Him for the last three years and not known who He actually was. They knew Him only as the Teacher, Master and of course Jesus. At that time, Jesus was only a few days before He entered Jerusalem where death was waiting for Him.
Jesus was Excited by God’s Revelation to Peter that He is the Christ (which means Messiah)
Suddenly there was a movement at the back and one of them stood up as all the others turned their heads to find out who he was. They saw Simon brother of Andrew square his shoulders, cleared his throat and pointed his finger at Jesus and boldly said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Jesus said, “Wow, wow, Blessed are you Simon wa Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my Father who is in heaven. From now onwards, you are Peter (which means rock), and upon this rock (of revelation that I am the Christ which means Messiah, the Anointed one, or the Anointing), I will build my Church (which will be founded on the revelation that I am the Christ, the Anointed One of God who has been anointed by the Holy Spirit to preach good news to the poor in spirit, and), I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. He then addressed the other disciples and told them, (and by extension is telling us), that “And I will give unto you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matt 16:13-19 [KJV])
God Gives the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven to Whoever has Knowledge that Jesus is the Messiah
Knowledge of who Jesus is, that He is the Christ (which means Messiah, the Anointed One, His Anointing, the power of God on human flesh) gives you the keys of the kingdom of heaven which gives you power to bind what you do not want and release or loose what you want from heaven.
God through His Son Jesus Christ is able to give to whoever believes in Him the keys of the Kingdom of heaven so that whatever they bind in the name of Jesus shall be bound in heaven, and whatever they loose shall be loosed on heaven. God has revealed through His word that we can bind whatever we do not want in our life: diseases, bondage, devils. God explains that we have power to bind all those works of the devil including the devil himself because the devil is a weakling. We have the power through the Christ in us to bind him, torment him and destroy all his works. To bind means to tie so tightly that we immobilize his activities and his works. The power to bind has been given to whoever has knowledge that Jesus id the Christ.
Keys of the Kingdom Give the Believers Power to Bind What They Don’t Want and Release What They Want
Believers have the power to bind whatever they don’t want including diseases, devils, curses, poverty, temptations which are brought to us by the devil himself to torment us. Believers also have the power to loose or release what they want for themselves and for their loved ones: God’s blessings, God’s favour healing, joy, freedom from bondage, prosperity, God’s goodness as long as we ask for it in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God,the creator of heaven and earth. Jesus told His disciples and to us by extension that “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13[KJV])
Knowledge that Jesus is the Messiah is the Good News of the Kingdom of God
The good news (Gospel) of the kingdom of heaven is the gospel Jesus preached. It is the good news of the anointing! Most Christians today would be shocked by that fact. They know nothing about the anointing because when the Bible was translated into English, the translators failed to translate the Greek word Christ. And because of it, the devil was able to steal a major revelation from the Church. People began to use the word Christ as a title. Some even used it as if it was Jesus’ last name. But it is not. The word Christ is an English translation from the Greek word Christos that is a translation of the Hebrew word Messiah. Translated into English, it means anointed or the Anointed One. It also refers to His anointing.
The Gospel of Christ is the Gospel of the Anointing Because He is the Messiah, the Anointed One
Thus when the New Testament refers to the gospel of Christ, it is talking about the gospel of the anointing that destroys the yoke. Prophet Isaiah looked forward through time by the Spirit of God and saw that a redeemer was coming. One who would finally free us from the oppression of the devil. “And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” (Isaiah 10:27)
Isaiah said that this anointing would annihilate the devil’s yoke so completely that there would be no evidence that it was ever on your back. Isaiah looked forward through time and saw a redeemer coming, the Messiah, which means Christ. Jesus being the Messiah or the Anointing or the Anointed One was anointed by the Holy Spirit to destroy the yoke. Jesus was anointed to destroy the yoke of the devil.
’The message of the anointing is the good news of the sin-annihilating, sickness-crushing, poverty-pulverizing, bondage-removing, yoke destroying anointing power of God. Jesus brought that anointing into our midst. That is the reason it is called The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ! ”
And Jesus then addressed all the disciples and told them, “Now that you know that I am Christ, the Messiah who was prophesied, the anointed one of God who has the anointing of God upon Him, who has the God’s power rubbed into me by the Holy Spirit, I give you the keys of the Kingdom of God.
The Keys of the Kingdom of God are for Binding and Loosing
The same anointing that I have, the same power of God upon me I give you. Whatever you as a servant of God anointed by the Holy Spirit shall bind, stop, cancel, disable here on earth or at home, or business, or marriage, family, whether it is demonic power or disease or curse or poverty shall automatically be bound in heaven, meaning that God will bind what we bind, God will remove what we do not want and God will curse what you shall curse. Whatever you loose, release, allow in you or around you here on earth in form of blessing, healing, favour, will be loosed or released by heaven and given unto you. If you confess blessings to be released from heaven, they will be released from heaven.”
Whatever you Bind, God will Bind
When you have knowledge of Jesus as the Anointed One and the Anointing of God, you are given power over all the power of the enemy the devil and you can bind him and then cast him out. To bind means to tie so tightly that the person bound is immobilized and can do harm. Jesus taught that if you want to spoil a strong man’s goods, first bind him and you will easily spoil his goods and his house before you humiliate him and triumph over him. “Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.” (Matthew 12:29) The devil is powerless when faced by a person anointed with the Holy Spirit of God because Jesus rendered him powerless when He triumphed over him openly. “As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk you in him: Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And you are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also you are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also you are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, has he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” (Col 2:6-15 [KJV])
What You Release or Loose, God Will Release
“Whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matt 16:13-19 [KJV]) Whatever you loose, God will loose. If you loose a person bound by demons, he or she will be loosed because believers have been given power to set captives free. Loosing means setting free and also releasing prisoners free by loosing their chains. Release what you want from heaven and shall be released because the word of God says so. Release good health, prosperity, favour of God, God’s mercies and they shall be released because He has vowed to honour His word above His name. “I will worship toward your holy temple, and praise your name for your lovingkindness and for your truth: for you have magnified your word above all your name.” (Ps 138:2 [KJV])
The Great Commission
After the Lord’s crucifixion and resurrection, and immediately before His ascension back to the Father, He commissioned the church to “go … and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (28:19). They would be able to do this because of Christ’s victory over Satan, who had long blinded the nations, for Jesus said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me’ (v. 18). Satan’s illegitimate power over the nations has been wrested from him, and placed into the hands of the legitimate Lord and Savior of the world. And the Lord Jesus Christ breathed His Holy Spirit unto His disciples and therefore to all who receive Him in their hearts. “Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:” (John 20:19-22 [KJV])
Christ Defeated the Evil One at the Cross
Now the Christian church can do its work; it can engage in successful mission all over the world, bringing the good news of freedom from captivity to those who had long been in chains because of sin and unbelief. Colossians 2:14–15 makes it clear what happened to the powers of evil through Christ’s ministry, especially what He accomplished on the cross: “[He] cancel[ed] the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” This indicates that wicked powers were defeated in principle at the cross of Christ. When Jesus purged all of our sins on Calvary, something happened to Satan. The evil one lost his authority to keep people back from God. He was thunderstruck and dumbfounded by what Jesus accomplished at the cross. The devil is so weak that only one angel of God is required to bind him.
“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.” (Rev 20:1-3 [KJV]) If one angel of God is such powerful over the devil, how much more are we who can be called sons of God if we accept Jesus Christ to be Lord and Saviour of our lives? Will the angels not be there for us to serve us? The Bible says that “Are the angels not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14). The angels are destined to serve you if you are a servant of the Most High God.
Christ The Anointed One of God upon you will Destroy the Yoke of the Devil
If you believe in the work of salvation Jesus Christ did at the cross, the anointing of God upon you will destroy the yoke of the devil on all those who are chained as long as they believe. And the yoke of the devil shall be destroyed by the anointing (the Christ in you – Col. 1:27) of God upon you. “And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden (devil’s burden) shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” (Isa 10:27 [KJV]) The devil’s yoke around your neck shall be destroyed because of the Christ in you. That prophesy by prophet Isaiah was fulfilled when “Jesus…came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” (Luke 4:16-20 [KJV])
According to these scriptures, the message Jesus preached was this: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me…’ That may not mean a lot to you right now, but if you keep reading for a few minutes, that verse will make you want to shout for joy.
The dictionary meaning of the word anointed actually means to pour on, smear all over or to rub into. So Jesus was telling the people in Nazareth that day, ‘God is poured on, smeared all over and rubbed into Me.’ He was telling them from the book of Isaiah that He had come with the yoke-destroying, burden removing power of the Almighty God all over Him.
He did not just make that statement either. He began to preach a sermon saying: ‘’Hey. I have good news for you! Poverty is a yoke and I am anointed to destroy it! Broken heartedness is a yoke and I am here to destroy it! Being a captive to sin is a yoke and I am here with the yoke-destroying power and presence of God. I am here to get the burden off your back! I am here to set you free!”
If you know that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Anointed One of God who has the Anointing on Him like Andrew, who on “first finding his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.” (John 1:41) He has transferred His anointing unto you by rubbing Himself into your flesh as He fills you with His Holy Spirit. And whatever you shall curse shall remain cursed, whatever you shall bless shall be blessed and when you shall submit yourself unto God. Demons will flee from you. Jesus said that greater miracles than the ones He dis shall we do because He goes to the Father and he will leave us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth. Jesus told His disciples and is telling us to “Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” (John 14:11-18 [KJV])
And the apostles did greater miracles than the ones Jesus Christ did because He promised to give them power over the power of the enemy. “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”(Mark 16:15-18 [KJV])
“And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.” (Acts 19:11-12 [ESV2011])
“And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women. Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.” (Acts 5:14-16 [KJV])
Let us look unto Jesus and receive Him in our hearts believing that He is the Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One who has anointed us with His Holy Spirit so that His anointing upon us will destroy every yoke of the devil upon us whether sicknesses, captivity, curses and all manner of evil because Christ in us is greater than he who is in the world, and we are more than conquerors through Christ who loved us (Rom 8:37).
Amen.
